Artist: Nina Smart
About the Artist:
Nina Smart is an award winning Australian Artist who focuses on contemporary portraiture. She uses an array of colour and abstract watercolour techniques in her art-making practice to form artworks, with her signature technique being that of "dripping". Her "dripping" technique is accomplished through a large use of watercolour paint and water, and tilting her canvas (in an upright position) to allow the paint to run or "drip" down the paper. In her recent 'Face Navigation Series' she "explores how social media, anonymous communication and diminished face recognition relate to our individual identity, ego and self". Her series was so successful that she was awarded the "People's Choice" Award at the Williamstown Contemporary Art Prize in 2009.

“The 'Face Navigation' series is inspired by my perception of self and others in a time when our appetite for information technology is insatiable and the way we communicate is rapidly evolving."
